5 Steps to Getting a Real Estate License in Alabama

Basic Requirements

  • You must be 18 years or older
  • Have a high school diploma or GED equivalent 

Step 1:  Complete 60 hours of pre-licensing education

Step 2:  Pass your course final 

After you finish the course, you will need to pre-register with the Alabama Real Estate Commission to receive your ID number. After that, you will take an online proctored exam. To pass the exam, students must earn at least a 70%.

Step 3:  Pass the Alabama Real Estate Commission’s exam with a 70% or higher

PSI administers the in-person state licensing exam.

The exam is split into two different portions: a state portion and a national portion. The state portion consists of 40 multiple choice questions. The national portion consists of 100 multiple choice questions. You will have 3 ½ hours to complete the exam and earn a 70% or higher.

Step 4:  Obtain a fingerprint-based background check

Applicants must submit to a fingerprint-based federal and state criminal background check through the AREC’s processing company, Gemalto.

Step 5:  Submit an application for an Alabama Salesperson License

To apply for your Alabama real estate license, you must submit your application to the Alabama Real Estate Commission.
