Before looking at specific course hours, every Maryland agent must account for a critical compliance regulation governing the renewal timeline.

By state rule, CE education providers are granted up to 14 days from your date of course completion to upload credits into the MREC system.   • The Commercial Only Shift: If you operate strictly in commercial real estate, your 2-hour Fair Housing requirement shifts instead to a mandatory 2-hour course covering the Federal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (Topic P) and the commerical version of the BRAD course.

2. Brokers, Designated Branch Office Managers, and Team Leaders

Because supervisory licensees carry extra operational liabilities, MREC replaces a portion of the elective hours with dedicated management education.

  • Total Hours Required: 15 Hours every 24 months

  • The Supervisory Track Curriculum:

    • 3 Hours: Legislative & Legal Update (Topic A)

    • 2 Hours: Fair Housing (Topic C) [Or ADA Topic P for Commercial Brokers]

    • 3 Hours: MREC Ethics (Topic D)

    • 3 Hours: Principles of Brokerage Relationships & Disclosures (Topic H) [Or the commercial version of BRAD Commercial Brokers]

    • 1.5 Hours: Real Estate Supervision (Topic I)

3. The "Initial Renewal" Track (First-Time Licensees)

If you were initially licensed on or after October 1, 2023, and are facing your first Maryland renewal cycle, MREC enforces a unique mandatory curriculum. You cannot take standard electives; instead, you must log 15 distinct, mandatory hours:

  • The First-Cycle Curriculum:

    • 1.5 Hours: Real Estate Financing (Topic O)

The Inactive License Policy

A common point of confusion is how the commission treats agents who are not actively practicing.

💡 The Inactive Mandate: Under Maryland statutory regulations, licensees whose credentials are on inactive status remain fully responsible for renewing their license and completing their continuing education requirements. To keep an inactive license from completely expiring or facing reactivation penalties, you must still log your required CE hours and submit your renewal on schedule.
