Having ADHD & Choosing Real Estate as a Career Path
How often have you heard, “You can do anything you set your mind to”? If you have ADHD, you probably heard it a lot growing up, especially in school. But when thinking about starting a new career it can lead to more questions than answers.
Often referred to as the Paradox of Choice, when presented with many doors to walk through it can become more difficult to pick just one. This can be especially true for people with ADHD. And since you’re already looking becoming a real estate agent, let’s discuss how it may be a great career for you!
Strengths of people with ADHD
Choosing a career that capitalizes on your strengths may be the key to professional success with adult ADHD. Some of those strengths likely include:
- Thinking outside of the box
- Work well under pressure
- Outgoing
- Ability to hyperfocus
- Problem solving complicated matters
- Independent risk-taker
All of the above are used in a career in real estate. Playing to your strengths is key to finding success and building a lasting career.

After having looked through about 30 different articles, there were some definite patterns. Jobs that involved creative problem solving, lots of social interaction, and unique work schedules were the major themes. Teachers, first responders, computer/graphic design, and sales representatives were among the most popular listed in almost every article.
One profession, however, was listed on every page! Drumroll please….. (you can really tell this writer has ADHD)…..
Entrepreneur!!! Which isn’t technically a real estate agent but that’s what real estate agents are. As a real estate agent, you’re able to set your own schedule, work directly with clients, and build your own network of clients.
Is being a real estate agent the right thing for me?
If you enjoy working with people and socializing, you might be a real estate agent! If you enjoy betting on yourself and taking a risk at an exciting career, you might be a real estate agent! If you work well under pressure dealing with many people with many different motives, you might be a real estate agent. Do you also hear Jeff Foxworthy’s “you might be a redneck” joke while reading this?
I won’t pretend to know if being a real estate agent is right for you, but I can tell you your ADHD will not be a major obstacle if you want to be a real estate agent. In some ways it might be what your best at!
